Take note of these times

August 2001 was a pivotal date in the history of Nigeria. That was when the first Global System for Mobile (GSM) communications call was made under a democratic government. This event heralded the dawn of a new era, the era of GSM technology, which has completely changed the face of doing business in Nigeria.

We have a tendency to forget things easily. When I say we, I mean Nigerian’s. Can you imagine that seven (7) years ago we could not communicate as easily as we can now? You have to own a land line to make a call or stand endlessly on a NITEL queue to make a call. A lot has changed since then, we now make calls at cheaper rates and in much more convenient circumstances compared to eight years ago.

We presently are going through a time when there is epileptic power supply. There is an on going probe in the power sector which has revealed a lot of mis-management as well as mis- appropriation of funds. All this resulting from years of bad leadership and greed on the path of most individuals that find themselves in position of authority.

I will pay more attention on leadership and power because they both play an integral part in the growth and development of our nation. Positions of Authority should not be used as a platform for learning how to rule but rather a reward for proven discipline and outstanding leadership qualities.

Most leaders in our country today used their offices to practice leadership. This was as a result of long years of military rule and as a result, a loss of confidence in a smooth transition to democracy. All sorts of individuals got into power and the result is a political system that has a lot of errors.

Power happens to be a major issue. If this can be solved, a lot of hardship faced by the average Nigerian will disappear with it. I imagine if every home has 24 hours power supply, cost of production will go down, there will be one less problem to worry about in every home. A lot will change if this is solved.

However one thing is certain, once this is solved, we will forget that there was ever a time when we had a power problem or if there was ever a time when our leaders could loot the treasury and remain in Government. We will also see scenarios where if a Government official is indicted, he will resign immediately to ensure the administration remains credible. Lets remember these times and if possible take some pictures, you will be amazed in 5-10 years time when you look back at these times and discover the changes that have taken place over time.
